Save Password. Can anyone tell me how to date grover 2 to 1 ratio pancake tuners? My google searching did not turn up much. Also, why are they considered desireable? The set that i have slip like a cowboy boot on ice. Any info would be great! They look pretty cool on an old banjo, but they are only a short step up from friction tuners. If they slip, check the screw on the knob is snug–don’t overtighten. Are they even a step up from ordinary friction tuners?

The serial of mine is which I supposed is an earlier model since its first release in mid I gathered. So far, this is what I have noticed after comparing the many Google images. The newer serial number has hit the 17,xxx already. The newer fretboard and bridge is Sipo. The new tuner has Grover label on the pegs. Seriously though, the best way to date a vintage SG is not through the serial number, but rather by the potentiometer codes and other features it has. Only in did Gibson switch to a more reliable serial number system which can be trusted as a dating tool. Even then, you want to have a rough idea of when it was made based on the features first, because they have used several different serial number formats through the years.
